An interview with Billie of Belleville Kids Boutique

Tell us about your Annerley business?
Belleville is essentially a kids store (though there is a smattering of products for adults too) that provides good quality interesting clothes, shoes and gifts for children who like to be a bit left of centre. Having a child of my own made me realise just how early we establish our own tastes, interests and our sense of 'self' – by the time she turned 18 months, she had become very particular about the colours, textures and patterns she preferred to wear.

At the same time I also became increasingly aware of the vast array of Australian creative talent popping up and I felt a strong desire to have a store that catered for children and supported local independent designers and artisans. The labels I select are whimsical, wearable and fun children’s wear that positively influences the way children look, feel and live.

Why did you decide to set up your business in Annerley?
I purchased a beautiful home in Annerley three years ago after returning to Brisbane from a long stint away, both overseas and interstate. Annerley seemed to have everything I was looking for - so close to the city, the Cultural Centre and easy access to everything. There is a wonderful blend of high density living and big grand homes that have been spruced up, as well as a delightful multicultural aspect. I completely fell in love with the community village feel of Annerley Junction and decided that I wanted to be part of the wonderful potential I could see in this area.

What do you see as the future business opportunities in Annerley?
There is SO much potential here, particularly with the development of the Boggo Road Precinct now underway. New establishments like the Dudley St Espresso show there is a great need for more of the same - I can rarely get a seat. I'd love to see more creative retailing in the area as well as a quality bakery, deli and florist – combined with the fantastic op-shopping and antiques it could be a wonderful one stop destination.

What is your favourite aspect of the Southside?
The multiculturalism is so strong here. I grew up as an immigrant child in Dutton Park and this inner south area seems to be such a melting pot of cultures, religions and peoples, all part of a strong community of new Australians all influencing the changing face of Australia. I'm hoping for an influx of modern African and Indian restaurants in the near future.
